Starfield Observatory

Info:

Prepare for observing. If you really want to stay into the evening, dress warmly, even in the summer. Although the weather may seem warm after the long winter, you will be standing still most of the time, so dress like you were going out in subfreezing weather. Note that even though the observatory roof is open, the walls cut the wind.

Some have been comfortable through the night (in September!) with:

Long underwear, heavy shirt, sweater, winter jacket, warm hat and neck covering, winter socks and boots.

There is no running water, but there is a modern Maine outhouse.

Bring your own bottled water and snacks. Snacks help keep you warm also.

We have general dim red lighting in the observatory.

A red flashlight will allow you to read your own star maps and other displays.

Use a dim red LED keyring or flashlight, or cover a penlight with red plastic or cellophane. We have a limited number of art store red cellophane scraps if you have none.

Note that a 10,000 candlepower lantern with a thin sheet of red plastic is not a dim light!
